WhiteGlowingWaterlily2.jpg

I was going to wait and post this picture on Easter, because it partly speaks of Easter to me. You see, it has a lot of the right elements.

Water
Green
A glowing white flower

Life, birth
White in the midst of dark.
Hope & promise in the midst of despair

Spiritually, it feels right.

But emotionally, it doesn't quite fit. Overall, it feels too dark, and not celebratory enough.

Therefore, I'm posting it today, in this in-between day.

My feelings about today may or may not be in line with how the church (universal) would like me to interpret the significance of today. But one of the great things about Christianity in the United Church of Christ is getting to interpret the bible in my own way and not being told how to think or feel about it (and not needing to worry about if my thoughts are 'in line' or 'out of line' with someone else's interpretation of the bible).

In trying to interpret what today may mean, I have been thinking about the first Christians, the disciples, and I've been trying to imagine how they might have felt. I imagine that having just seen Jesus crucified, they were likely in mourning and were terrified that they might be next.

However, I cannot identify with those feelings. Since I know the resurrection is around the bend, I always feel like this in-between day is not as sad as Maundy Thursday and not as celebratory as Easter. Thus, it never feels quite like a true day of mourning to me. It feels, well, in-between.

I hope this makes sense. I know a fair number of my friends (and some family) are not Christian, so hopefully, you know enough of the story to understand what I'm trying to say.

Sometimes, more than others, I struggle between writing and photography to simply document my own thoughts and feelings and writing as a way to have a conversation with you.

(Note: I took this pic with a Sony Cyber-shot and did not photoshop it at all.)

SPDWork.jpg
pic taken with self-timer

I heard, through the grapevine, that today's Self-Portrait Day theme was to take a picture of yourself at work.

Well, I was originally not going to do the photo, until Ladybug's post reminded me of my daily breakfast (at work) of CHEERIOS.

CheeriosOnShelf.jpg

YUM.

So, now you can envision me every weekday morning while I'm sitting at my computer, eating my cheerios and drinking my tea (white cup) and water (green cup).

----------------

On the subject of work, Ladybug and La Pixiatrix asked me about how my job stuff turned out (via email), which reminded me that I never posted anything more about it all.

To make a long story short. I had an initial gut feeling about how one of the positions seemed to fit my interests better than the other. I took a week to contemplate it and discuss it with a few people (family & friends). Every time I vocalized my rationale for leaning toward one over the other, I would feel more confident about my decision of choosing that one over the other.

In the end, that is the one I chose. I accepted the position last Monday (in the midst of the new blog design and the shout-outs by Zoot, Ladybug, and Honestyrain, which is why it got lost in the shuffle a little bit). I am very excited about the work I'll be doing and am particularly pleased with A) the collaborative environment that they've established and B) their willingness to support me as I develop an independent line of work. I also really clicked with the woman who will be my boss, which is a nice bonus.

I feel pretty good that at least one (major) aspect of my future is settled.

I was tagged by Ladybug (who was tagged by Susie, who was tagged by Bucky Four-Eyes.

1. What book would I like to be?

Heck if I know. I looked around Amazon for a book focusing on life balance, tea, and chocolate, but you know, it just doesn't appear to exist. The life balance ones look far too kooky.

I did find one called "Tea and Chocolates" and one called "Coffee, Tea, Chocolate, and the Brain". Those will have to suffice. I can be a brain (be brainy) and have my tea and chocolate too.

2.Have I ever had a crush on a fictional character?

I think one of my first loves was The Man In Black (i.e. Westley) in The Princess Bride by William Goldman.

PrincessBride.jpg

How can you resist the wry humor of a strong, male romantic lead in a book/movie with this on the back?

BackOfPrincessBride.jpg
(note how the Girlie is inching her way into the photo)

3.What is the last book I bought?

RecentlyFinished.jpg
Fast Women by Jennifer Crusie

It wasn't quite as good as Faking It or Welcome to Temptation, but a good read.

4. What is the last book I read?

Same as 3 above; I tend to read them as fast as I buy them.

5.What am I currently reading?

CurrentlyReading.jpg
The Forest Lover by Susan Vreeland. I haven't gotten very far in it yet, so I'll have to post something about it when I finish. It is a historical novel about Emily Carr, who was an artist (painter).

6. What 5 books would I take with me if I were stranded on an island?

I have decided to treat this question as, which books am I willing to read over and over again (and have read over and over again), and not which books would actually help me survive on a deserted island.

4ofTheBooksForIsland.jpg
1. Into the Wilderness by Sara Donati. I've gotten a number of friends hooked on her books. If you like movies like The Patriot or The Last of the Mohicans, you'll love this story. If you like reading Diana Gabaldon's books and wish someone else wrote as well as Gabaldon, well, you can find her equal in Sara Donati. This book has humor, history, romance, drama, excellent characters, and beautiful storytelling.

2. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. I made the mistake of starting this series the week before finals in college. It was all I could do to not keep "taking a break" from studying to read "just a little bit more" of Outlander. Thank goodness she'd only published 2 books at that time.

3. Lady of the Forest by Jennifer Roberson. I don't know how many versions of Robin Hood I've read, but this is my favorite, and I re-read it every few years.

4. The Stars for a Light, the Cheney Duvall, M.D. series by Lynn Morris and Gilbert Morris (a father, daughter writing team). I started this series because it reminded me of Dr. Quinn (the TV show) in that a woman becomes a doctor in an era when women doctors were few and far between.

KnightInShiningArmor.jpg
5. I can't even begin to tell you how many times I've read A Knight in Shining Armor by Jude Deveraux. Doesn't it look well read? It is next to some very strong contenders who didn't quite make the top 5 cut. Born of the Sun by Joan Wolf, the For the Roses series by Julie Garwood, and Jewels of the Sun by Nora Roberts (first one in the Irish Trilogy).

7. What 3 people am I going to tag and ask to answer these questions and why?

La Pixiatrix - she is the first person from the dooce comment board who reached out a hand to me via email. We bounced ideas off of each other back when we were planning our blogs and she has been supportive of my blog and photography. I'm also really curious what her answers will be to some of these questions.

Part-timer - she has such a fun-loving spirit about her. She has been supportive of me and I think she will see this as a fun blog post.

Amanda B. - she also has been supportive of my blog and has sent me emails of encouragement and friendship. I'm curious to hear her answers.

CloseUpOfHerEye.jpg

I've been wanting to tell a couple of stories about the Girlie-girl, but I've also known that her stories need to be put into context.

I haven't always been a cat person. In fact, I was strictly a dog person for the first, oh, 22-23 years of my life.

NipperYard.jpg

I took this pic of our Yorkshire Terrier, Nipper, with my first camera. (I took a digital picture of the print, which lowers the quality, but I'm working with what I've got here, cut me some slack.)

Wasn't he cute?

I was very young when we got him as a puppy, I think I was 4. I have many, many memories of him. Someday I may tell some of them; it still hurts a little to think about him being gone.

He was with me through all of my growing-up years.

NipperChair.jpg
Mom took this pic of him.

My only exposure to cats during those years were cats that were none too friendly. These included my grandparents' Siamese cats (Some had friendly moments but were mostly not friendly to me.), my friend's pissy, mean black & white cat, and the pissy, mean black & white cat that belonged to HB's family. The only good cat experiences I'd had were with my grandparent's farm cats who seemed to be pretty happy-go-lucky, loved to be loved on and would purr and purr.

Jump ahead a few years, to when HB and I are in college and engaged (and are separated by 250 miles). I am in a dorm and have good girl friends, but HB is all alone in an apartment. The winter/spring before I am set to graduate and we are planning to get married, HB is getting more and more lonely. Someone he works with has a cat that has kittens and he really wants to get one.

Now, remember that my experience with cats was all fairly lukewarm. And I am fully aware that if he gets a cat, this cat will be with us and not just him, in the very near future.

How can I deny him a cat? So, I tell him it is okay to get a kitten with a few rules
1) The cat must learn to not get on end tables and tables.
2) The cat must learn to scratch on a scratching post and not the furniture.
3) He must play with the cat every day, no matter how tired or busy he gets. (Because I was convinced that cats get bad attitudes from lack of attention, especially when they grow out of their cute kitten phase.)
4) He is in charge of the litter box.
5) I'd really rather it not be a black and white cat.

When she is old enough to leave the momma cat, he brings Miss Cuteness home to his apartment.

I never got to see her during her kitten stage, but I still love looking at these old pics that HB took of her climbing on the headboard of his bed.

GirlieKitten_headboard.jpg

GirlieKitten_ClimbingOnHeadboard.jpg

"Um.... so about that black and white 'rule'..."

He played with her every day. He taught her to scratch on her scratching post, and stay off of the tables. And as she grew, she stayed very well behaved (and we've gone through a lot of scratching posts).

Her favorite toy was her koosh, and she loved getting on anything that was black (she still prefers black or dark objects over light).

GirlieKoosh.jpg

The only thing we didn't think of ahead of time, was the sleeping arrangements. You see, while HB would sleep on one pillow on one side of the bed, she would sleep on the other side of the bed on the other pillow.

Now, jump ahead to July/August of that year. HB and I get married and the 3 of us move to a new city and our first apartment together. And where do I sleep? Well, on the other side of the bed, of course.
The side that She had been sleeping on. I was on Her Pillow!

And she had a plan. Just as I'd fall asleep, she'd attack my feet and legs. I'd push her away, and she'd stop for a while, until I fell asleep... and then attack my legs again.
We'd close her out of the bedroom, and she'd rip at the carpet under the door.
"Shit! We just paid how much money as a security deposit and she's ripping up the carpet! Quick! Open the door!"
Fall asleep, get attacked. Fall asleep, get attacked.

It was a rough month or so. To say the least.

Finally, she started sleeping between HB's legs and would leave me alone if I kept my feet inside the covers.

To help her accept me, I became the one who fed her and petted her nicely. She always thought of HB as her play buddy. Not to say that he didn't pet her or I didn't play with her; it was just the roles we fell into the majority of the time. In fact, this pic is me playing with her koosh and getting her to jump and twist.

GirlieandMeKoosh.jpg

This was back in her thinner days, when she'd jump in the air to play.

And if a flicker of sun caught her eye up the wall, she'd jump up to bat at it.

GirlieJumping.jpg

With time though, she gained weight.

She went on a diet. And just became less active. And she'd gain weight.

And we'd cut her food more, and she'd become even less active than before. And she'd gain weight.

CurrentDayGirlieKoosh.jpg

But well, we can't all be slim and trim, right?

And as you probably know from my previous posts, our relationship has grown and grown over the years.

She waits for us until we come home. She follows us around, hangs out with us, and is friendly to visitors (as long as they only pet the dark areas!)

Her white belly may look soft and cuddly, but it is the venus-fly-trap belly.

GirlieAndMeTugOfWar.jpg
Current pic of the Girlie-girl

I'm pretty sure that she loves us as much as we love her.

She is my cuddle-buddy.

Look! Look!

Our yard finally has a bare patch where the snow has melted.

Maybe Spring really is going to arrive...

... in another month.

Note: I am fully aware that the 'first day of Spring' is tomorrow. However, I am not a big fan of what I refer to as 'calendar Spring', because well, Spring means new growth on trees to me, and I'm just not seeing it yet. (although, I've noticed a few trees trying to put out little itty bitty new brownish/reddish/orange shoots). But the majority are still hibernating.

Oh, and did you notice how the neighbor's yard across the street has way more exposed grass than we do? What is that about the grass being greener on the other side of the road? hmmm?

Isn't this one unusual?

I don't think I ever mentioned it before, but last year at about this time of year (i.e. when everyone is sick and tired of snow and winter) there was an orchid show on Cape Cod.

There were an incredible number of sizes, shapes, and colors of orchids (which, of course, provided great fodder for photographs).

enjoy!

grrrrr...

Due to HB's and my crappy schedules this week, we haven't had a decent phone conversation for the past few days. And now there is a possibility that he could get stuck in Minneapolis over the weekend due to an impending snowstorm.

I'm not in the best of moods, to say the least.

Watch out for that right claw. It'll get you every time.

This pic is here as eye candy.

I've been wanting to post some pics I took over the weekend of the new Joe Bender that HB received for his birthday. Here's Joe on my handlebars.

joebenderhandlebar.jpg

But also, since Ladybug and Honestyrain were so kind as to spotlight my site, I thought I might give a tip or two for anyone wandering by, and perhaps my handful or so of regular readers may find out about some older posts that they haven't seen.

The closest thing I have to an introduction about my blog is the post I put up the day that I officially started, December 31st, 2004.

On Dec 31, I actually posted a bunch of stories that I'd emailed to friends and family about our mountain biking excursions. If you want to see the pics from our fall/winter New England bike trips, click the cycling category on the left. It also includes a post explaining why I have my bicycle in my living room, in case you were wondering. Oh, and as long as we are talking about my bike, here is a pic of Joe Bender protected by my water bottle cage.

joebenderwaterbottleholder.jpg

My favorite story about a mouse and our cat is here.

And my latest favorite part of my site is Flowers for Friday. Again, the Flowers category has them all. Of course, today is not Friday, so the one above is simply a Bonus! Hope you like it.

All pics were taken with our Sony Cyber-shot; none were digitally enhanced.

BubbleGum.jpg

Last Saturday, on HB's birthday, when I was in Minneapolis with him, we went to the Mall of America. I don't know if you have ever been there, but I had not. Honestly, I'm really not much of a shopper. I think all of my family will attest to the fact that I only go shopping when I'm in dire need of something, and that is usually a month or so past when I really should've replaced whatever it is for which I am shopping. Shoes, pants, jeans, you name it, not a fan of going to the mall.

Now, if you plop me down in an artsy place like Wimberly, Texas or Fredericksburg, Texas, or Rockport, MA or Concord, MA I will go in and out of shops looking at earrings and random objects for hours on end (stopping for tea and/or chocolate to fuel my endeavors at appropriate intervals, of course). However, the practical things in life, nope, don't really like buying them.

BUT, the Mall of America was calling me, you see, because it has an Amusement Park in the center of it! HB had told me it actually had a roller coaster! AND the Mall of America has Lego Land! And I simply could Not Resist the pull of the two of them combined.

I was amazed when I walked into Camp Snoopy (the name of the amusement park) and saw the roller coasters whipping around.

CampSnoopyRollercoaster.jpg

CampSnoopyRollercoastertotheright.jpg

It was so exciting and happy. And it just reminded me of all of the good times I've had at amusement parks.

Now, HB is not a big fan of roller coasters. And since it was his birthday, I probably should've been the good wifey and told him he didn't have to go. But you have to understand that we'd been planning my visit for a while, and everytime we'd discuss our itinerary, he brought up the idea of going to the mall and riding the roller coaster. So, I just couldn't see how we could skip riding it.

And, as it turns out, while I was taking the 2 pictures above, he went off and bought tickets so that we could ride one of them. So, ride it we did!

WaterAndRollercoaster.jpg

And it was sooooooooooooooooooooooo much fun!

(for me)

HB, well, I don't think he'll be going on it again anytime soon. (sorry, hunny bunny, but thanks again for going with me.)

Have you noticed in the pics above how there are trees and water? I was impressed with how much nicer Camp Snoopy looked than I'd expected. As we were walking along one of the paths, I saw this really cool tree.

GracefulConifer.jpg

I think I want one of these in my yard, someday.

After we'd spent enough time in Camp Snoopy, we ventured to Lego Land, of course.

LegoLand.jpg

You can kind of see in this pic (from left to right) the pirate set (see the mast of the ship and the Jolly Roger?), the water set (the black octopus), the construction guys, the dinosaur, and Harry Potter (near the bottom).

I went into the Discovery Store at one point, while HB went into the Apple store. I was still looking around when he told me he was going to duck into the restroom for a bit.

And that, my friends, is when I discovered (ha,ha, 'discovered' at the 'Discovery Store', so clever, yeah, I know) the Shiatsu massage chair.

OH my.

I can see why I could never get on one of those chairs at the Sharper Image. (There was always a line of people waiting to try them out.)

Ohhhhh it made my back feel really, really good. And all that tension I'd been carrying around? Just massaged away.

verra verra nice.

Of course, since it was HBs birthday, I made sure that when he came back to find me, he got to spend some time on it too.

So, all in all, a good first trip to the Mall of America.

How COOL Is It that HB asked Zoot to make me a new design for my birthday!!!?

Such a cool way to surprise me too! Zoot was on standby last night (HB tells me), a Friday night, no less, and got it all loaded after I went to bed last night so that the first thing I saw this morning is my new design!

Zoot, you are SO AWESOME! I LOVE the colors and you got my Tea and Chocolate right there at the top! I can't stop looking at it.

HB, well, you come up with some of the best ways to surprise me and show me you love me! You got to be here when I saw it for the first time, so you know how excited I am over this.

I can't stop smiling. Sorry if this is a bit incoherent, I'm still in awe/shock.

This has got to be The Best birthday present I've received as an adult!

Hi! This is Zoot and by request of Danielle's husband, I have set up a new blog design for Danielle since her birthday is tomorrow. I hope she and all of her readers enjoy it!

Danielle? I've enjoyed working on this site for you. I hope you enjoy it. Because it is not MY site, I cant test all the details successfully. If you come across a problem? Let me know!!!

HB? If you want to delete this and put your OWN birthday entry? Feel free, but let Danielle know I said "Happy Bday!" too!

A little Girlie-girl story for the day

Ever since I came back from my trip to Minneapolis, the Girlie-girl has started a new little morning routine. Somewhere around 6:00 a.m. she comes up to lie by my pillow. Now, this is unusual for her, because normally she is strictly a foot-of-the-bed or between-your-legs kind of cat.

pause

um, does that sound bad? hmmm... well, I'll leave it there for Friday laughs, that sort of thing.

Anyway, my alarm goes off (most days) at 6:25, I do one snooze, it goes off again at 6:32, and I roll out of bed at 6:33 or 6:34. (Bear with me, these times become important in a minute) So, since I've back from Minneapolis, when the alarm goes off at 6:25, she stands up and crawls up on my chest, which of course brings me full awake, because 20 lb of cat on your chest will do that, you know. And she lays with her head facing me, purring, purring, and purring.

I guess what used to be my snooze time is now officially her cuddle-time.

Which brings me to this morning, alarm clock is set for 6:25 (I think), she comes to lay up by my pillow somewhere around 6:00 (I didn't look at the clock). At 6:15, I crack my eyes open enough to look at the clock and do one of those "oh good, I don't have to get up quite yet, maybe I'll just go back to sleep" things.

And here is the fascinating part. At precisely 6:32 she meows and wakes me up! The alarm never went off at 6:25, which meant that it also didn't go off at 6:32. And if she hadn't woken me up, I would've kept sleeping, missed my train, and been 'late' to work. (It turns out it was set for 6:25 p.m. instead of a.m.)

What a good Girlie-girl, extra cuddles for you tonight!

Now, she has woken me up a couple of other times when I've overslept, back before we started this little morning snooze/cuddle-time routine, but she's been a few minutes off.

What I want to know is: can she really read the numbers on the clock? or is she just that good at judging the time with regards to sunrise?

self_portrait_Chihuly.jpg

A few things struck me while visiting Minneapolis. Note, I'd call it Minneapolis/St. Paul, the Twin Cities, but alas, we didn't really visit St. Paul. Evidently the people in St. Paul have a bit of a complex about not being mentioned most of the time, but well, there ya have it. We drove through it and didn't stop, so Minneapolis gets the mention this go round.

Where was I? Oh yes, things that struck me.

1) Minneapolis is prepared for cold, nasty weather.

I think that it is so incredible that there are miles of skyways connecting the buildings downtown so that you can travel from one end of downtown to another without needing to venture outside. I was impressed with the idea of it, back before I'd ever seen it, when HB had simply told me about it. But until you actually see it and experience it at lunch hour on a weekday, well, there is just no comparison. You can see a few of them in this pic.

Skyways.jpg

I think I am even more appreciative of the idea of traveling inside to get from building to building after the day I had yesterday. Here I was, semi-sick/recovering and I had to walk a few blocks outside to get to a different building. This meant that I slogged in the pouring sideways rain to get there, and slipped in the sleeting sideways ice pellets to get back. ugh.

2) Minneapolis is a city that appreciates good food.

For those of you who are vegetarians (for ex. Honestyrain) well, close your eyes/ears for a minute. I had some of the best sausage and bacon that I've had in years at the restaurants in Minneapolis. ooooooooooooooh be still my heart. (please, no snarky remarks about how the cholesterol in the sausage and bacon will be sure to still my heart if I'm not careful, yada, yada, yada, I've heard it all before.)

Okay, you can look/listen again. I had an incredible cinnamon roll for breakfast one day (at Keys), and a caramel roll another day (at Hell's Kitchen). Oh, they were heavenly.

Then there was the lunch at Brits, where HB loves the fish and chips.

Brits.jpg

After my lunch of fish and chips, I could see why he would go on and on about it everytime he visited. I can't wait to go there in the summer when they have the lawn bowling.

And then there was our special tea time. Well, tea time for me, coffee time for HB. We went to Zelo's in the late afternoon on Friday. It was our chance to savor the excitement of embarking on this new chapter in our lives and of getting to explore the city together. It was also our chance to celebrate a successful round of interviews for me and his birthday a day early.

My dessert and tea
BdayCake.jpg

Why don't we get a better look at that, shall we?
MyDessert.jpg
mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm it was goooooooooooooood
or gurt-ah.

His dessert and coffee
HBsDessert.jpg

We saw some cool artwork too. But that doesn't exactly fall into the category of food, does it?

Chihuly_cropped_00288.jpg
Isn't it incredible? The pic of me at the beginning with it, is a reflection in the base.

Why is it that no matter how much water you drink, or how many times you wash your hands, and how careful you are to not rub your face or eyes, you still get sick when you fly on an airplane?

erg.

Just call me the sick chicky-wicky.

No really, it is probably 'cause I ran myself ragged before going and wasn't getting enough sleep etc., but isn't it more fun to blame it on bad air exchange?

hmmm?

Oh, I forgot to mention, I must've caught this sickness on the flight there. Yup. I was sick for 1.5 of my precious days with HB and for the flight back (oh joy). I was careful not to spread it around on the flight back, I promise.

Saturday, March 5

Oh my gosh! We had Such a very fun time last night.

We have a friend (guy, Mr. F.U.N.) whom HB has known for about 10 years, but I've known for 5. We've never all lived in the same city, but everytime we get together, we have so much fun. It is definitely a 'birds of a feather' sort of friendship.

So, knowing that we appreciate the slightly offbeat &/or wacky aspects of dining and entertainment, he took us to, get this, the
Gasthof zur Gemutlichkeit.

You'd have to see it to appreciate it, and unfortunately, we didn't take the camera for fear of keeping track of it/getting it stolen. However, let me describe. When we walked in, the decor is totally Bavarian/German, the servers are in traditional German dresses, and the best part is that on one side there is a guy playing an accordian going from table to table serenading the table. TOO MUCH FUN!

It was a hoot. I have German roots, so I Love that kind of stuff. And the sausages.... ohhhhh... and the red cabbage....

When he came to our table, I told him I know all the words to Roll out the Barrel, so we got to do a sing-along (with HB and Mr. F.U.N. joining in on the chorus).

Uh-oh, leaving soon, gotta speed this along.

Another highlight was when I asked him if he could do a Sound of Music medley (which, is really set in Austria... but well, it is close, right?). So, he played Edelweiss, Do-Re-Mi, and the Three Goatherders. I was in coniptions.

Mr. F.U.N. also took us to a piano lounge that specializes in everyone joining in and singing along on the chorus of some of the songs. People who come to the bar can take turns singing. They (unfortunately for me) focus on songs that I don't really know (before my time), but they have some show tunes and a couple of more recent songs.

So, I got to sing Proud Mary and Fernando.

hehehe

okay, gotta run. But it was really cool getting to sing.

Happy Birthday, HB!

Good news!

My talk went well, and I've been offered 2 different positions (well, 4, if you are counting the other 2 that are less of a good fit).

So, I'm very relieved, and excited, at the same time. Well, and exhausted. I have one more meeting tomorrow and then I'm free to go out and have fun with HB.

Now, I'll just have to weigh the pros and cons of each, although I have a bit of a gut feeling about one already. I need to think about it a bit longer.

It is good to feel wanted.
