Well, here it is Wednesday and I'm just now putting up the exercising post for the past couple weeks.

I hope that all of you have been exercising away! How have you been doing?

Saturday, June 2

As you can guess from the title, I weighed myself this morning.

Guess what?

I've lost 20 pounds since I started my attempt at weight loss by changing my eating habits! That is 20 lbs over 5 months.

The only thing I've done differently is change what I eat for lunch and occasionally remember to eat less at supper (I'm eating less cheese for one thing). So, what have I done to my lunch? Well, I'm eating either Smart Ones or Lean Cuisines with a Stonyfield Farm lowfat yogurt each day. It might sound boring, but there are enough different types of meals that so far, I haven't gotten tired of it. The main thing I have to watch out for is that I go to the grocery and buy 3 weeks worth of meals all at once - yep 15 boxes of food and 15 yogurts - and if I'm in the mood for a certain kind of food at that moment, I tend to buy all of that by accident. For example, the time before last, I was in the mood for creamy, saucy foods. So every dish was creamy/saucy and I didn't have any Mexican or Italian dishes. Then this time, because I'd had such a dearth of Mexican and Italian dishes, that is practically all I bought.

The other thing is that as I wheel around the grocery and go to check out, I sometimes feel a wee bit embarrassed that I have a whole bunch of 2 types of food in my cart. But that feeling passes soon enough and then I'm glad that I don't have to go back again for another 3 weeks. And then, of course, I have to fit all of that in our freezer. It is a bit tight, but (just barely) works.

So, that is probably more than you ever wanted to know about my food habits. But after 20 lbs, I figured it was worth mentioning in case anyone else wants to try it.

Oh, and at the beginning when I was trying to get used to eating less, I'd have a banana too or a random piece of fruit. Eventually, my stomach adjusted and I just got used to the smaller meal.

I'm excited. I'm down to a weight that I haven't been since I was in college which was over 10 years ago. I'm about ready to try to buy another jean size smaller too. I haven't quite psyched myself to go jeans shopping and potentially be disappointed that I haven't actually gone down in size yet. Plus, it is a difficult time of year to buy jeans, since everything is shorts and capri pants right now.

I'm also thinking that I'll fit into one of my favorite dresses again. The infamous red dress, for Texas Seestor and my parents. It really doesn't go out of style, I think.

In fact, with tomorrow being Pentacost, I might try to see if I can wear it for church tomorrow. Although with wearing a choir robe, it isn't really noticeable. But at least, I'll know that I'm wearing red.

:-D

Watch out! I'm on a roll!

Ugh. This is such a terrible time of year for exercising. Is anyone else doing better than me (none this week)? Please say yes. Maybe it will help motivate me.

Actually I think my best hope is to get back into it while I am in Texas and enjoying the nicer weather and then maybe trying to stick with it more when I get back. Perhaps I'll make a New Year's resolution about exercising for the first time ever.

Yesterday, I read an article about how with the sun going down earlier, the lure of the couch is stronger than the excitement of going out to exercise. I know I've felt that the past week, and that was before this whole time change thing, which means that the sun is going down even earlier. Thus, I've decided to start exercising at the gym. I've got my bag of clothes and my shoes all packed for this evening. I just hope that the juice in my iPod lasts until I go exercise. I've never tried unplugging it so far in advance from when I want to use it. Keep your fingers crossed.

In the meantime, how did you do last week?

Saturday, August 26

This morning, I finally gave in to the urge to weigh myself. You see, ever since the scale refused to budge after months of exercising, I'd convinced myself that I'd better just not weigh myself anymore, because it was simply too disheartening.

But guess what?!

I've lost 10 pounds! Yes! You heard me right. Ten whole pounds.

I guess exercising really is starting to pay off. It makes me grin with excitement.

This also means that I am back to my pre-writing-my-thesis weight. Which makes me wonder if I'd fit back into my old jeans again. But that is one thing I'm really afraid to check. Because, it would be too disheartening if they were too tight to zip shut or button. I had recently noticed that my newer jeans of the unheard of size seemed to be a little bit more loose than I'd remembered. But you know how jeans fit kind of tight when they just come out of the dryer and then as the week goes on, they get really loose? So, I was afraid that the whole loose jeans thing was just a mark of my slothfullness of wearing them too much. But maybe, just maybe the loose jeans combined with the new (well old really) number on the scale might be telling me that I really have lost some inches after all.

This gives me new motivation for exercising. You know, cause now I feel like it is paying off.

10 pounds! I still can't quite get over it.

Sunday, May 7

This week, I had to admit to myself that all of this exercising is not shrinking my body size back to what it was before I came to MN to write my thesis. You see, somewhere amidst the inactivity of writing, I discovered that I could no longer fit into my jeans. Fortunately, I still had a set of pants that I could wear when we went out. However, with my new job starting tomorrow, I could no longer put off going jeans shopping.

Just for a moment, imagine going to a store and having to go up one size in jeans. Doesn't it make you pause? Why does a number matter so much? Because it is a size that I vowed to avoid. At least at this time in my life.

But I bit the bullet, and picked up that size and tried them on and sure enough, they fit like they were made for me. Bummer.

But at least I found some jeans. I was getting kind of desperate at Kohl's because all of the jeans I tried on had these really short waists. The jeans didn't even cover my underwear they were 'riding' so low. Fortunately, Penny's had some 'normal' jeans that did cover my underwear. Isn't that a requirement for jeans usually? I had thought so. And it wasn't like I was shopping in the juniors section. We are talking jeans for adult women that don't cover underwear! Gives some explanation for why there were so many available to choose from when we are going into shorts, and heaven forbid Capri pant season. (I'm not a fan of Capri pants on myself. You, you can go ahead and wear them to your heart's content. Me, I'll pass.)

And there you go. My weeks of activity have as yet made no dent in my body size. However, I have not given up. Plus, my goal is really to be more fit. But I had secretly hoped that I'd lose some weight too. I'll keep at it and we'll see what happens.

How did you do this week?

Can you believe we've been at this for 11 weeks already? Almost 3 months!

This is a record for me! I actually LIKE exercising now. I know everyone said that if I stuck with it long enough that I'd start to want to exercise, and it really has happened.

It actually happened weeks ago, but this is the first that I'm bringing it up.

I feel so much happier about myself. I almost skipped one day this week, because I'd gotten rained on 2 days in a row and I didn't feel like getting rained on again, but I figured if I could just get my exercise clothes on, I'd feel better. And sure enough, as I was tying my shoelaces, I could feel the excitement about going out.

It makes me happy.

I have a belated story to go with this week's entry.

While Texas Seestor was here, she encouraged me to buy a Cardio Pilates DVD. Then she insisted that we do the DVD together. Now, mind you, I'd had the flu a couple days before and was, well, gassy, to put it mildly.

So, we start this DVD and one of the very first positions the instructor wants us to do is this crazy ass rocking thing where you put your legs out straight at an angle in front of you, you grab your ankles and then rock back onto your back and then rock forward into this position again. I'd do pictures, but I'm just not up for it right now.

With conviction, I jut my legs out at an angle and grab my ankles and then I pause, because I feel this urge. Well, I blithely ignore the urge and rock back and toooooooooooot! Yes, indeedy, the urge was not going to be ignored.

Texas Seestor was willing to take the high road and ignore that I'd just toooted really very loudly while contorting myself into this odd position, but I started giggling. And we all know what happens when you are gassy and start giggling, right?
It Just. Gets. Worse. and Goes Downhill From There.
toot tooot toooooooooooooooot Giggle giggle giggle Then SHE starts giggling and it just snowballs.
Finally, I pause the DVD to go to the bathroom and to wipe the tears from my eyes from giggling.

You've heard of Richard Simmon's Sweatin' to the Oldies, right?

Well, I think this DVD will now be known as Tootin' to Pilates.

Monday, January 30

In my post describing how much I battle getting myself to go exercise, Momo asked me if I would want to be email buddies and check in with each other once a week about how our exercising has gone for the week. Since this was along the same lines as a suggestion Amber made to me via email, we've decided to form an exercising club to help keep us motivated.

And, you are invited to join us!

Here's how it will work. On Sunday, I'll make a post where we can each comment about how our exercising/activity went for the previous week. You are welcome to put in as much, or as little detail as you want. You are welcome to comment every week or whenever you feel like it, but Momo and Amber and I are committing to commenting every week. I'm thinking that I'm going to commit to listing off each day of the week and what I did or didn't do that day; I'm still deciding if I want to include the lengths of time. It would be a nice way to see the progress I'm making and might keep me going past the 20 minute mark when I usually feel like stopping. I will probably put in the lengths of time.

Now, this is rather public (although my readership is relatively low) but for Momo and Amber and me, we are going to do it this way. For me, having it be 'public' will probably be the added incentive I need to keep at it when I'd rather not. I am one of these people who can stick with an exercising program for a month, but then the minute I get sick or travel or have something happen that makes it the littlest bit inconvenient, I stop. And once I stop, it is REALLY hard for me to get back at it again. So, I'm hoping this will
A) get me going again when I stop due to say illness/migraines and
B) will keep me going when it isn't convenient

If you want to participate, but don't want to do it by a public comment, you can always just email me (danielle at danielleblog dot com) and tell me if you do or don't want me to forward it to the people participating and we'll cheer you on via email.

That is really what this is about, having friends to encourage and support you, when the going gets tough, and to be accountable to someone as incentive to go be active when you don't feel like it.

And maybe along the way, we'll inspire each other in our battle to become more fit and healthier.

So start tracking your activity for the week and check back on Sunday!
