Happy Independence Day!

DSC_8263

I took these fireworks photos off of my back deck. They aren't really spectacular by any means. But they are the first ones I have ever taken with this camera. Sometime, I'll have to figure out the settings on my camera that I should be using a bit better. But for now, these will do to remind me of the experience.

DSC_8269

DSC_8272

I was able to get those 2 because the people who were shooting them off back by the lake had some that were one after the other in about the same spot. So, even though there was a delay on my camera taking the photo, I got some shots of fireworks. You can see one going up and getting ready to explode while the one before is still fading away.

I had a lot of fun watching the different fireworks. I've never lived somewhere where so many people shot off big ones that really look beautiful in the sky. There must have been about 7 different sets that I could see from our deck. It was really cool.

Happy Easter everyone!

As the song goes, Jesus Christ is Risen Today, Alleluia!

It has been a good Lenten season. I did read my bible and prayed almost every day. I've resolved to keep up the pattern even now that we are at Easter. I have tried to read the entire bible in the past but kept getting stuck; I'd start at the beginning and get weighed down in the old testament. This time, I'm going to focus on the New Testament and work through that.

I thought maybe I'd take my camera to church and take some photos of the Easter Flowers, we'll see. If so, I'll post them here sometime after lunch.

In the meantime - Happy Easter and Happy Spring!

UPDATED: Here are the pics I took.

I've been posting a ton of pictures on Flickr of my niece, Texas Baby Bunny a.k.a. Munchie. But since they are all posted as private photos for friends and family only, you won't see any on here. But here is a link to my photostream. There are photos of Munchie going for a wagon ride with me, Dad, and Texas Seestor. Photos of us pushing her on her swing. Photos with Christmas presents, including the present HB and I gave her - the Baby Grand Piano (which she loves, I might add). And pics of us sitting out in the fabulously wonderful Texas sunshine.

In the meantime, here is Max, the wunderbunny.

May you have a New Year filled with fuzzy and warm moments.

(Do you like how I tied Max in with the New Year's concept?) ;-)

Take care and talk to you soon!

I was looking for the blogthing that Ern (was it Ern?) posted on her blog recently. But alas, I couldn't find it.

But I did find this one about Christmas spirit.

Your Christmas Sprit Level: 70%

You have a lot of Christmas spirit, and it's evident to most people who know you.

You love most things Christmas, and you do your best to make sure everyone has a great holiday.

While you like the more commercial aspects of Christmas, you truly know what the spirit of Christmas is about.

You're all about giving, being kind, and sharing the spirit of Christmas with everyone you know.

I really like Christmas. Big surprise there.

As an aside, I decorated with lights the weekend of Thanksgiving this year. And finished decorating the trees the following weekend.

I got home at 6:00 tonight and decided that since it was still light out, that I had time to carve my pumpkin before the trick-or-treat-ers arrived.

It carved really easily. I wonder if that is because it is a few weeks old or because it wasn't as ripe? I don't know, but it was WAY easier.

I took that photo with a tripod. I really like how it came out. Hence the post. ;-)

DSC_6841.JPG

"Oh! What do you have there?"

DSC_6840.JPG

"Yum! Starbursts and 3-Musketeers and Twix and... Milky ways!"

"Lets be sure to save the bag of special dark chocolate for the end. Kids like Starbursts better anyway, right?" *wink wink*

This is the Girlie-girl's Halloween costume that HB picked out. I think it might be Pippi Longstocking. Any other ideas?

Oh yeah. And that is a white stuffed animal behind her. I know it looks a little odd.

Here is the "I've had enough, photo."

Hope you all have lots of fun today and eat lots of chocolate!

Sunday, December 24

- continued from before -

21. What is your favorite Christmas movie?

The Cutting Edge. It isn't exactly a Christmas movie, but it always reminds me of Christmas because it has a Christmas scene in it, has ice skating, and Texas Seestor and I went to see it in the theater when we were both home from college for Christmas break. I watch it every year.

I also like White Christmas a lot.

22. What do you leave out for Santa?

Nothing (ducks head).

But as children we left out a variety of cookies - decorated sugar cut-outs, pfeffer nusse, and peanut butter blossoms (the ones with the hershey kisses in the center). There were always crumbs left when we woke up in the morning. Come to find out, my uncle was always responsible for eating the cookies.

23. What do you want for Christmas this year?

Clothes. Isn't that dull? Ah well, it is what I really need and I hate shopping for clothes, so I'm asking other people to do the dirty-work for me. I suppose that is rather self-indulgent, but well, there ya go.

24. Merry Christmas Eve!

- continued from before -

16. What is your favorite holiday tradition?

Going to candlelight Christmas Eve service

17. What tops your tree?

An angel that Texas Seestor made for me when she was in grad school.

18. Which do you prefer, giving or receiving?

Both!

19. What is your favorite Christmas song?

I don't really have a favorite. Several make me get tears in my eyes when I hear them for the first time each season. I really like the newer ones by Stephen Curtis Chapman. But I'm a big fan of the other albums that we grew up with - Anne Murray and John Denver & the Muppets. :-)

20. Candy canes, yuck or yum?

Yuck probably. While I like peppermint a lot, a whole candy cane in one sitting is just too much.

Wednesday, December 20

-continued from before-

again, feel free to chime in with your own answers!

6. What is your favorite holiday dish (excluding dessert)?

Dill pickle doobers! Remember these are the things that I talked about when we went to the State Fair. I was so excited to find them outside of our household. These are dill pickles smeared with cream cheese and wrapped in dried beef then cut into slices (discs). It sounds like an odd combination, but they are sooooo yummy!

7. Favorite holiday memory as a child.

When we were kids, we spent every Christmas at my grandparents (worried that Santa wouldn't 'find' us there) and we wouldn't open presents until my parents got up; we never woke them up early. So, we'd hang out in the kitchen with my grandparents and eat breakfast. And the one thing we were allowed to do right away was check our stockings. And the stockings were on one side of the house and the tree was on the other, through a big open doorway. So, we'd go in there to check our stockings and we'd look toward the tree and would be so excited! Because the tree had more presents than the night before - Santa came! He found us! And then of course we were excited about our stockings too. It all comes together in a memory of a very special time.

8. When and how did you learn the truth about Santa?

I don't remember.

9. Do you open a gift on Christmas Eve?

Nope. All presents are on Christmas day.

10. How do you decorate your tree?

With care. I love looking at the ornaments as I unpack them from the boxes that they are stored in. I also like hanging particularly special ornaments at eye-level and particular ones near the angel on the top.

I got this as an email from AquaSchwa. I was thinking that as we approach Christmas, I'd post the questions and answers to some of them on different days.

Feel free to chime in with your own answers if you feel like it. That is part of the reason why I'm just doing part of them at a time. I think it is too hard to do too many at once.

1. Egg nog or hot chocolate?

Hot Chocolate - did you really have to ask?

2. Does Santa wrap presents or just sit them under the tree?

As children, Santa wrapped presents and my sister and I would take turns opening them. Now that we are older, Santa doesn't leave presents - they are all from family.

3. Colored or white lights on the tree/house?

White outside - living in New England for 7 years rubbed off on me. Almost everyone does the 'classical' white lights outside.
Colored inside - the more the better. But no flashing or craziness.

4. Do you hang mistletoe?

No, it always seemed like an odd tradition to me. I kiss the people I want to kiss when and where I want to kiss them; I don't need prompting.

5. When do you put your decorations up?

The weekend of Thanksgiving if we are home. If we aren't home, as soon as possible. Usually the weekend after. If I don't do it that weekend, it kind of bugs me and makes me feel like I'm cutting short the Christmas season. Because by that time, the advent wreath is getting lit at church.

Happy Thanksgiving, everybody!

Hope you can easily think of all of the things for which you are thankful.

I've had a good morning so far. I slept in, had a great cup of tea and some pumpkin bread with my toast. I watched a bit of the Macy's day parade and sat outside in the sun and read my newest book for just under an hour.

Now, the family is prepping the turkeys for a 2:00ish meal! Ought to be a good meal.

Thinking of all of you today, because you are part of what I'm thankful for.

Sending hugs across the miles,
Danielle

Monday, December 26

In case you were wondering what kinds of things I did or thought or felt over Christmas, I'll do a recap.

The morning of Christmas Eve, I felt really really glad to realize that I had the day OFF and the next day too. I enjoyed lingering over tea, reading blogs, and reading my book. This would be the book that started off with all the dead chickens on Plow Monday, which is a terrible way to remember a book - but I fear it will always be 'the dead chicken book' to HB and thus to me. All weekend, he asked me if the chickens had come back to life yet.

Anyway, I will tell you that the book had quite a few twists and turns and a female character with courage, backbone, a strong sense of justice, and a willingness to put aside her own needs for the greater good of her country. Of course, since it was really a love story, albeit a complicated one, she eventually realized that putting her own needs aside for the good of the country was only worthwhile for a year or two, and eventually found a way to rule the country and have a husband too. This was a book by Laura Kinsale. I've read another of her books that was very striking that I own. I'll have to request some more of her books at the library.

I had proposed the idea to HB that since I was taking the day OFF, we should (finally) go see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. And we did! Dolby Digital sound, unfortunately no one is projecting it digitally anymore, because it has been too long since it came out.

It has been a while since I read the book, which is nice, because I'd forgotten just enough that I didn't sit there thinking "Oh, this was better in the book." or "Oh, this is such an odd way to do this scene." etc.

I enjoyed it. Sometimes, when I read novels, I have trouble imagining the largeness of a scene. For those of you who know what I'm talking about - the opening scene with the World Cup for Quidditch is the one I'm thinking of. I never would've imagined a stadium so large or a field so large.

The same is true for the dragon scenes. I don't remember envisioning Harry's chase to be that elaborate. And the Yule ball! I would've loved to have seen more of the ball.

End result: I enjoyed it a lot.

We went out for supper, as a holiday treat that I thoroughly enjoyed and I got to do something artsy that day, as you likely know. ;-)

The church service filled me with a lot of remembrances of years past. Years growing up and going to my aunt's church for Christmas Eve (we always spent Christmas at my Grandma and Grandpa's), driving to and from church listening to whatever radio station was playing Christmas music and singing along, looking for houses with cool lights. The singing of Oh Come All Ye Faithful and ending with the passing of the candlelight and Silent Night... and wishing we could sing more than just a few verses. The service never feeling quite like I expect it to be, but nice, all the same.

Christmas was again another day to sleep in and linger over breakfast. This time with cinnamon rolls though. It was a day of presents, and talking to family on the phone and wishing we could all be together, but making the most of our conversations on the phone instead. I received some wonderful gifts of books and music and clothes and tea and chocolate and things for our home that help make our house feel like a lovely home and a DVD of an Alison Krauss concert that made me realize how Funny she can be! And what great music she sings. And you've seen most of my photography experiments for the day in my post yesterday.

We had our traditional Christmas meal, which for us is:
olives & carrots to nibble on while waiting for the food to get done
dill pickle doobers - you wouldn't believe me, if I told you.
ham
mashed potato casserole (i.e cream cheese and sour cream mixed in)
green bean casserole
cranberry relish & pineapple tidbits in cherry - raspberry jello
-----
Tangent: I called the grocery every day from Tuesday to Friday to get the relish. Thank goodness they finally got it in! I bought 4 containers so that I can have it consistently from now until Feb. I love it THAT much.
-----

yum. It was fantastic.

I was sad at the end of the day, knowing I'd be back at work today.

But it sure was nice to have 2 days off!

HB and I usually try to surprise each other with gifts that the other one wouldn't expect. Some times this works out better than others, as you might imagine, or perhaps you have first-hand knowledge and can completely relate. There was the year that I found him an unusual bar set, where each tool had eyes cut out of it so that each one looks like an animal of some sort. You know, the ice tongs look like a shark, the martini strainer looks like a lion, that sort of thing. I think that was one of the cooler gifts that I've found for him. Well, at least I always thought so, but maybe it because I liked it a lot too. And now that I think about it, he really did seem more thrilled about that scotch I got him a couple years ago too...

Also, we usually do the traditional wrapping of the presents placed under the tree, that sort of thing.

But this year, HB went a different route and led me down to our living room with my eyes closed.

And look what he got me!

DSC_1553

Isn't it cooooooooooooooool?!

At first, I was surprised to see a Really Red teaset. But MAN, just look at that teapot!

DSC_1574

It can blast out at you like a neon fire-engine.

DSC_1562

Or look like Alladin's lamp.

DSC_1571

How could I resist something with such great curves?!

It really is striking. Get it, striking, HB strikes again?!

tee-hee! Don't mind me, I'm just happy and tired, all at the same time.

I took all pictures with Dee-Dee, my Nikon D-70. For some I used the combination of a tripod and self-timer (for the first time) in order to avoid the whole blurry/shaking/too much caffeine issue.

Happy Independence Day, everyone!

I am having an absoLUTEly FABulous holiday weekend!

I am overflowing with excitement about a variety of things. One of them being my brand-spanking-new camera, Dee Dee.

I've been taking oooooodles and ooodles of photos (342, not including the ones that I deleted shortly after taking them). I am slowly learning the best ways to capture images, and am getting even bettter at holding very very still, and focusing, focusing, focusing.

Framing & focusing.

Photo taken by HB with our Cyber-shot DSC-P71, 'cause, ya know, I'm holding the Nikon D70 in my hands.

That was how I was laying on our grass to get the photo of the one at the top.

Holding very still is particularly important for images like this.

ring_of_red_DSC_0319.jpg

Um, these are... (consulting the little plastic tags that came with the annuals)

...'Tukana Scarlet' Verbena hybrid.

They really have done very well since I planted them. I admit, I'm not very good about watering them everyday and tend to underwater my plants more than anything. I aim for at least 3 times a week. Perhaps they like those conditions?

red_annuals_looking_up_at_edge_of_flag_DSC_0342.jpg

I thought the shadows that they cast were quite pretty too.

red_annuals_shadow_DSC_0338.jpg

While I was taking various photos of the Tukana Scarlet Verbena, there was a bee buzzing around one of the other annuals, which was, 'Summer Wave Blue' Torenia hybrid.

bee_purple_annuals_DSC_0324.jpg

I was working with Dee Dee on manual focus at the time, and was having a bit of trouble focusing on Mr. Bee himself. But I guess without realizing it, I was focused well enough on the flower to get a nice effect.

busy_as_a_bee_DSC_0325.jpg

The other nice thing about my lovely new camera is that the images are sooooo large (3000 pixels wide, and I only post 500 pixel wide images), that I can crop out a tiny part of the image, and still get a nice photo for you.

I can't wait to show you some of the others!

teee-heeeee!

I took all of these photos today, July Fourth! with Dee Dee, my brand spankin' new Nikon D70.

As part of our Christmas activities while family from out-of-town were visiting, we went to Newport, RI to see the Newport Mansions.

This was the second time I have visited the mansions during the Christmas season. Sometime, I hope to go in the spring/early summer when the flower gardens are in bloom. However, regardless of the seaon, I think that there is striking beauty in the architectural and design details.

These pictures are from The Breakers, Marble House, and The Elms. The only photography that is allowed inside the mansions are of the Christmas trees, so all but the last picture were taken outside.

CopperLampTreesBreakers.jpg
I love the way the lamp design mimics the shape of the trees. There is also a carved vine wrapped around the post.

I think all homes should have gargoyles as part of the gutter system. They are much cooler than downspouts.

I love the detail in the stonework at The Breakers.

The sun was beginning to go down as I took this picture, and I love how the under side of the archway is golden from the setting sun.

Marble House is also quite impressive and beautiful even in winter.

Saturday, January 8

I took a number of pictures over Christmas and I've decided to drop them into roughly 3 categories (pet photos, deocorations and home entertainment, and outings).

One of the moments I wanted to capture was from my church's Christmas Eve candlelight service. However, some of it simply cannot be captured in a picture. It is the experience of going to church so late at night, the coldness in the air and the feeling of anticipation walking from the parking lot to the church. It is the greeting of friends, and the joy of creating music. It is the beauty of the dimly lit church, and the hush of the service as the candlelight is passed during Silent Night.

ChristmasEvePassingTheLightDim.jpg

Traditionally, my family looks for Christmas lights while driving to and from the Christmas Eve service. This year, I tried taking pictures of a few memorable homes. Some came out, but some didn't. Here are a few of the highlights.
The first is of our town square. I love when tree trunks are wrapped in Christmas lights. The year that we coverged on Texas for Christmas (Hi, Texas Sister!), I saw lots of trees with wrapped trunks (I think they were live oaks). It is less common to see wrapped trees in New England. But our town has caught onto the idea.

TreesInSquare.jpg

The other interesting thing, I think, about New England is this view that colored lights are tacky. One of the first years that we lived here, I remember reading an article in the newspaper about this view. Here is what I like to think of as classical, tasteful, New England Christmas decor.

ClassicNewEnglandChristmasDecor.jpg

The funny thing is that white lights can be a bit gaudy too, if you use enough of them.

WhiteLightsCanBeGaudyToo.jpg

Now, I'm not saying that this home is gaudy. I actually like the balls in the trees. I'm just saying that it is possible to go a bit overboard with the white lights too.

Then there is the Crazy Christmas House. Unfortunately, all of their lights and wooden lawn decorations were not lit up that night. So, a photo op was lost. :-(
However, the 2nd Crazy Christmas House was lit up. Yes, indeedy! Now, remember, we are talking about crazy for around here. Not crazy for the country's standards as a whole.

CrazyChristmasCropped.jpg

One thing I noticed about this picture is how the whole house looks like a face. If the star is a nose, then the lights on the eaves are the upper row of the mouth, and the lights under the window are the lower part of the mouth with the shutters as the sides of the mouth. Do ya see it? Except what then is the tree on the left? a big wart? hmmmm... I wonder if they meant for it to look like a face, or if it happened accidentally?
The second thing, and the thing that makes this place particularly funny, is that it is a two family home. I've put an arrow pointing to the 2nd doorway.

crazychristmashouse.jpg

I know, it is hard to see the part of the house on the right, because they have no decorations. I always wonder if the family on the right thinks that there are enough on the other half, that they don't need any. Or are they secretly unhappy about the exuberant decorations by their neighbors? Or do they not celebrate Christmas? I don't think it is that they don't celebrate at all, though, because a couple of days later, I saw that they put a few lighted snowflakes in their window.

Our own home, was lacking in our usual lighted garland (white lights, of course) and bows. I just never seemed to get around to putting it up this year. Ah well, I like how our home during the early part of the snowstorm on the day after Christmas.

SnowfallHouse.jpg

Did I mention home entertainment in my title? Well, I didn't know how else to classify my dipping of pretzels in white chocolate. Again, it is a bit of a family tradition to have certain foods at Christmas time. I tried to do most of them.

1. White chocolate dipped pretzels - check.

WhiteChocholateDippedPretzels.jpg

2. Chocolate marshmallow fudge - check. Made with ghirardelli double chocolate chips, of course.
3. Swedish spritz cookies - erm. not this year.
4. Pfeffernuesse cookies - erm. Sorry, no baking. But I made dirt pudding, does that count? no? oh, well, I'll try again next year.
5. Peanut butter blossoms - no. can I give up yet?
6. Decorated sugar cookies - no. but that one is really grandma and aunt M's thing. so, I can get away with not doing those, right?
7. Nuts and bolts - erm.... guess I'm not doing as well on our traditional foods this year, eh?
8. Blue cheese ball - YES! I did that one! and man, we are still eating it.
9. Cranberry-pineapple jello - YES! See, I can do traditional foods. This also proves that I have my roots in the midwest.
10. Ham - YES! and boy was it good. Kentucky smoked even. (HB made it, but I can still put it on my food list, right?)

I think I'll stop there. If I hadn't just eaten lunch, I think I'd be hungry again.
I hope you had some goodies too.

Is it wrong that my home entertainment consists of food? Well, people who know me, know how much enjoyment I get out of food. And those of you who didn't know that about me before, know it now, eh? Guess it is the German heritage showing again.

Wednesday, January 5

Over the next few posts, I'll be sharing a sampling of the pictures I've taken during the Christmas season.

My favorite hat this season was this Dr. Seuss-looking Santa hat.

SantaHatSnow.jpg

When I wore it to a friend's Christmas party, the 'lil girl doggie at their home, who is quite friendly and happy-go-lucky felt the need to protect us from it. So, the hat sat in the corner for a while until she got adjusted to it. After a while, she investigated it.

Tizer.jpg

However, all of the party activity really tuckered her out.

TuckeredOut.jpg
(isn't she adorable?) I get my doggie-fix by visiting her.

Then, there is our very own girlie at home.

GaladrielReflection.jpg
I like this pic, in particular, because you can see her reflection a little bit in the window.

I felt guilty when I realized that we hadn't bought her a Christmas present this year. Each year I usually get her something.... but well, this year it kind of slipped my mind. When I mentioned this to HB, he said "Well, she can have all of the wrapping paper and boxes." This from the man who insists on picking up all of the paper as we unwrap. Well, I knew he wouldn't be able to stand leaving the paper out long enough for her to play with it, so I wondered if she'd really have anything all her own.

hmmmm.... On Christmas day, we had this great shirt box. And we set it on the floor. And I kid you not, I turned on the camera to take some pictures of my cool new socks (and pajama pants)

CoolSocksAndPants200pixels.jpg

and what does she do, but run over and come lay in the box.

GaladrielInBoxMySocks200pixels.jpg

People ask me how I can get pictures of her... I think she secretly loves having her picture taken. Although in this instance, she probably really just wanted to lay in the box in peace and not have 2 separate people trying to take her picture.
